Can my loft be converted?

Most lofts can be converted, but the crucial factor is how much height you currently have. for a good quality room the more height the better, we normally recommend at least a minimum 2.3m to the current apex, if you have less then this the final room might be compromised, but there might other option available we can discuss these when we do the survey.

How much will it cost?

Price will depend on the type of conversion and the size of the property. We have produced a list of average prices. Loft conversions costs

How long will it take?

Once all permissions, agreements, and notices are in place, the majority of loft conversions will take around 8 weeks to build and complete, sometimes sooner. You learn more by reviewing our process and timescale page.

Do I need planning permission?

In most cases, you will not need planning permission for your new loft conversion unless any of the below criteria are not met:

  • A volume allowance of 40 cubic metres additional roof space for terraced houses
  • A volume allowance of 50 cubic metres additional roof space for detached and semi-detached houses
  • No extension beyond the plane of the existing roof slope of the principal elevation that fronts the highway
  • No extension to be higher than the highest part of the roof
  • Materials to be similar in appearance to the existing house
  • No verandas, balconies or raised platforms
  • Side-facing windows to be obscure-glazed; any opening to be 1.7m above the floor
  • Roof extensions not to be permitted development in designated areas
  • Roof extensions, apart from hip to gable ones, to be set back, as far as practicable, at least 20cm from the original eaves
  • The roof enlargement cannot overhang the outer face of the wall of the original house.
